Valle de los Caídos III (Cuelgamuros), Madrid (2016). The Valley of the Fallen is the site of the largest mass grave in Spain. Built by the forced labour of political prisoners, and inaugurated on 1 April 1959, it contains the remains of 33.833 people.

The Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen is the largest mass grave in Spain. It contains the remains of 33,833 people, among which are the fascist leader of the Spanish Falange José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the dictator Francisco Franco and 12,410 unidentified republicans killed by the former and transferred without permission or knowledge of their families. The monument was built for the heroes of Francoism with the work of political prisoners and was inaugurated on 1 April 1959.
