During the Spanish Civil War, on 22 May 1938, there was a massive escape from the prison at Fort San Cristóbal. It was one of the largest and most tragic prison escapes in Europe. 795 prisoners, almost all republicans, escaped, 207 were killed in the capture when they tried to escape through the mountains and buried in mass graves and only 3 managed to cross the French border. 14, considered organizers, were shot on 8 September 1938 at the Vuelta del Castillo in Pamplona.
